Answers, and a way to reach us.

Most questions are below. For a step-by-step walkthrough of any tool, Your Guide is the longer version.

Frequently asked

Why is my phone number my identity?

It is how PhoneForge tells one profile from another. There is no password, and nothing is sent to that number except a verification code when you ask for one.

Until the number is verified it identifies a profile but does not unlock one: typing it on another device will not bring your details across. That is deliberate. A phone number is not a secret, every one of your contacts has yours, so on its own it must never be enough to open an account.

What does signing up actually give me?

Four things that are not possible without it. Your processed contacts stay encrypted at rest, and your account is the key that lets you open them again; without one, every run is a fresh one-shot.

Your history survives the session, so you can see every run you have done and re-apply or roll back from any point. You can change browser or device, sign in again, and get that history and those contacts back, where anonymous use loses them. And once sign-in is finished, one account means the same phonebook everywhere.

What goes in my profile, and what does not?

Your own name and contact details, so they can be written into the files you make. That is all.

It is never the things you put through PhoneForge. The contacts you clean, the documents you join, convert, shrink or scan, and the files you compare for duplicates are processed and dropped whatever your profile is set to. The privacy page sets out the difference.

Do I need an account?

No. Every tool works without one, and there is no trial that expires. An account is made in one place, by signing up with your mobile number, and nothing else is ever sent to that number. Until you do, nothing about you is stored and the Account and Profile screens stay out of your way.

What happens to the files I upload?

Contacts are sent to the server to be cleaned and deleted when your session ends. Documents and scanned pages are deleted six hours after you last touch them. Duplicate finding in Cleaner happens in your browser, so those files are never uploaded at all.

The privacy page is the long version.

Is it really free?

The everyday jobs are, with no account and no trial that expires. The limits are published on the pricing page: 500 contacts per deduplication run, six hours of file storage. What costs us money to run, chiefly the AI passes and longer storage, is what the paid tiers cover.

Why has a tool gone grey?

Some tools need software installed on the server: LibreOffice for document conversion, Tesseract for reading text in a scan. When a deployment is missing one, the tool is greyed out rather than failing when you press it. Nothing is wrong with your file.

I was editing something and navigated away. Is it gone?

No. PhoneForge keeps what you were part-way through, in your browser, as you work. Open the Library and choose Resume. Drafts are kept for seven days and never leave your device.

My contacts imported twice.

Most Android versions add rather than replace when importing a .vcf. Delete the old contacts first, or use the Apply to Google step inside PhoneForge, which replaces properly. There is a backup of your originals either way.

Can I use PhoneForge on my phone?

Yes, in the browser, and there is an app. Cleaner works differently on the app: it looks at your photo library rather than the whole device, because neither Android nor iPhone lets an ordinary app read everything on a phone.

Something here is wrong.
